I write about purpose often and get questions from people on how to discover their purpose. This is a difficult thing for some people and easy for others but I believe the single most important thing you will ever do in business is to discover and define your purpose.
I thought I would post a really simple way to explain the differences between a purpose that may be truly a purpose, but is uninspiring and one that is extremely inspiring.
Lets talk about this machine. It is just a machine … it can be any machine. All machines have a purpose. Lets say this machine processes data. What is its purpose?
Most would say its purpose is to “process data” right?
But how inspiring is that? Not very ! But this is how many business owners describe their purpose. “We make the best widgets yadda yadda” very uninspiring.
Now .. lets say that same machine that processes data is specifically used to process data when performing life saving cancer surgery on children.
What is it Purpose now ? “To process data during lifesaving cancer surgery so that children can live long and happy lives”
Same machine .. same function … but now we have a very inspiring Purpose! I would walk over hot coals and fight off a grizzly bear to make sure that machine was working properly!
Ok, so I have taken things to the extreme but the point is that you must be inspired by a purpose to be able to make a business successful over the long haul. Running a business is too hard, and you need to put in too many hours, and there will be too many challenges for you to face that will test your will and resolve. If your will and resolve is not massively inspired, you will eventually grind to a halt and then “Groundhog Day” sets in and you learn to survive rather than Thrive.
Is just getting by and surviving every day, and never achieving your goals good enough for you?
