“I am too old to become successful now!” Oh Really ??
This is a common feeling in business owners that have been in business for many years without achieving the results they dreamed of. I understand this feeling because, at one time, I felt the same way. I remember feeling resigned to the”fact” that we will never get to be a successful business and I will never have the financial rewards I need to justify all the risk and hours I put into the business. I also remember that this was a terrible feeling since I had such high dreams and aspirations when I first started in business and this felt like total failure.
What changed for me? A light came on in my head and I DECIDED to make a change. When I made this decision, I did not know exactly what the next plan was .. or how it would go, but I made this decision with 100% confidence that if I kept doing what I was doing, the way I was doing it, I would not end up where I wanted. I was 100% sure of that. So, I BACKED MYSELF and found a different road without hesitation and it was the best thing I have ever done. The main point in my journey is that I made a DECISION .. a COMMITMENT to change. After that, things started falling into place. Not perfect but so much better than they were!
Letting these negative feeling and thoughts consume you leads to what is called “fear paralysis”. You are afraid to take any more risks in fear that you will lose what you have now, and you are also totally unsure of what you would do differently anyway since nothing so far has worked well. Eventually, self-doubt becomes part of your every-day, this leads to a lack of confidence and then frustrations find their way into everyday conversations. Each day is filled with arguments and disagreements over every simple things and pretty soon your workplace is a place filled with unhappy people and high staff turnover.
I see this situation so often and it is very hard to convince a business owner in this mental “zone” that things can change… that they can still strive for, and achieve the goals of a great work/life balance and financial freedom they want to achieve. When you are in this mental state, your future seems to have a fixed address leading to a dark and gray location and that is not the sunny rainbows and unicorns address you pictured years ago.
How do you make a positive change I hear you ask?
I will not say it is easy because it’s not. But the first step is to make a decision … a commitment to yourself .. that things need to change. Make a realization that you need to get off this road and on to a different one. Different may not be better right away, but we can always find a different one after that also. We do have 100% certainty that the current road is not the right one and is leading in the wrong direction.
This commitment to yourself to change for the better must be done with confidence .. BACK YOURSELF ! You are better than you think you are! You have been in business this long and your years of experience is a highly valued commodity. At this point in your life, you have a much higher chance of success than a younger person starting out in business because you already know what NOT to do!
The next step … here is the easy part. Whatever is missing from your “tool box” of business skills is all you need to work on. You are a great tradesman already .. that has not made you a great business man, so all we need to work on is your business acumen .. or Entrepreneurial skills.
The good news is … I can help you with this. Over the years I have worked hard to add these skills in my “tool box” so that I can serve you in the best possible manner. What we need to do is help you re-define the dreams and goals that drove you in the first place to create this awesome business, and then work on new skills, procedures and methodologies in your business that will turn it into that well-oiled, finely tuned machine you want it to be.
