MY TURNING POINT...
After owning and operating a joinery manufacturing business for the better part of 15 years, I hit a point where I knew I have more to offer than simply continuing as I had previously by living each the exactly the same as the next. I had hit a point of burnout. The great thing I have realized is, that was the best learning experience of my life. I also realize that my ability to make a decision to change right then and there is is the foundation for my success today.
After much soul searching, I found what I truly WANTED to do based on what I knew I LOVED doing and what I believed would make me HAPPY. I recognized clearly that I wanted to help others joinery business owners, in the same way others had helped me. So I changed my career path to become the best Business Coach and Mentor I possibly could.
First I added to my already extensive experience in business, to include technical business knowledge (including Lean Manufacturing, CPIM, CAD/CAM etc) as well as what is known as "soft skills". As it turns out, it's the soft skills that are the most important! Since then I helped 100s of joinery business become profitable investments and great places to work.
I feel privileged to have worked with so many businesses and their people to have helped them make massive improvements in their long-term sustainability as well as their personal lives. My "real-life" approach offers you and your people the same light-bulb learning moments I have experienced that will take to the next level of success and beyond. You deserve the success and profits for your hard work and willingness to take the risks and I can help you achieve that.
Can you imagine a life where you actually enjoy going to work? It is possible, you just need the courage to take a step in that direction.
Sometimes all you need is a little help.

I was not a great student in school. Not bad, but not great. Like many boys, I did not enjoy school and could not wait until it was over. Funny thing was, I did well in some subjects and terrible in others. The subjects I did well in always had a teacher that inspired me, like my grade 11 maths teacher who inspired me to do well in advanced algebra. I found my science teacher boring so I failed science.
What I know now, is that I was as smart as anyone else in school. I was simply uninspired.
I also discovered a love of working with my hands to fix or create things. This may have been to compensate for my lack of confidence in my formal education, but either way, I loved working on cars and woodwork. In grade 12 I made my mother a grandfather clock and didn’t really think much about it. Years later others in my class told me they were very impressed with what I had done. I started to realized I had one thing I was very good at.
So, I am a "maker" at heart. I worked for many years as a cabinetmaker. It was just what I did, but more importantly … what I was.
I believe cabinetmakers and joiners are the good guys. We are the trade everyone thinks they can do themselves but then realizes it’s not that easy. The most underappreciated and underpaid, but we have an enormous amount of pride and passion for our work.
Creating beautiful objects, that last for generations and tell a story is something no other trade can do.
I took the path many cabinetmakers take and went on to run my own business. I can do it better than the boss … I can set my own hours ... I can be my own boss and make more money. Yep, that was the plan all those years ago. Sound familiar? I did get there in the end but not without a lot of pain and suffering.
After reaching near burn out in 2002, I sold my cabinet manufacturing business. I realized I had so much more to offer the industry. I discovered my true passion was for the business rather than the trade. Helping others in business became next obsession. I dove into coaching and advising anyone wanting my help as well as advancing my professional skills and knowledge.
Going back to school in my late 30's, and worrying that I would still feel like I did in high school worried me. I discovered that when I am passionate and inspired to learn, I can be the smartest person on the planet ...well .. it feels like that anyway!
This personal experience is one of my strengths I use to help many of my clients as we all seem to come from a similar place.
Now, after many years of business coaching, I find so many coaches offer to do things for you rather than help you improve and grow. I have rarely seen a “done for you” approach become sustainable
It will take you through a curve from frustration to optimism and back to frustration again becasue you will be back in the same place again after giving so much of your own time and effort.
Most often, the real problem remains largely unaddressed. A tradesman that has started their own business, and does not learn the business skills needed to create a successful business, will eventual struggle or fail. They remain staunchly proud of the work they create but not so proud of the business and over the years they become increasingly stressed and frustrated at their own inability to build a business that doesn’t require them working in it 60- 80 a week, every week of their life!
I believe it’s time we do things differently and not settle for just "surviving". You deserve better. I believe you deserve to have the personal freedom you want as well as pride in your business. Making more profit in the process should also be a priority.
What got you here, will not get you to where you want to be!
Having had the luxury of being involved with some very successful joinery businesses over the years, I have paid very close attention to what they are doing to create their crazy success.
Using this experience mixed with my own solid business acumen and experience, I have created the Joinery GPS System that is a new way for a business owner to quickly learn the business skills they need to
If you are ready to consider doing things differently so you can turn your business into a profitable investment, let’s have a short chat to see if I can help you.
